Palos Verdes is the Spanish name for the Indian term "green trees". The Peninsula covers approximately 26 square miles. Within its boundaries are four cities: Palos Verdes Estates (1939), Rolling Hills (1957), Rolling Hills Estate (1957), and Rancho Palos Verdes (1973). There are also two unincorporated areas, Academy Hills and Westfield.
